Have you heard the BBC Radio One interview with Eminem?
I just heard it several days ago.
It was a great in depth interview where they touched on many topics, like the state of Hip Hop & etc.
I found it ironic that the interview took place in my hometown, NYC NY.
It was in the Sirius Satellite studios. Sirius Satellite is where people pay for radio per month without commercials. In North America, we do not pay any sort of television lisence fee since most media is privately owned. This is probably why most of the TV shows I watch are torrents of shows like Gavin and Stacey from BBC and why I listen to Zane Lowe on BBC radio 1 or BBC 6 music. Anyhoo, that Eminem interview wasn't aired in New York.
I don't even want to get into the sorry state of hip hop radio in New York.
My friend Peter loves Rinse FM. Now, that is good.
I recently wrote a manifesto on the wasted superstars blog about the state of UK radio.
Then this interview made me realize that it's not so bad in the UK compared to home.
The radio in new york is like having to choose from Mc Donalds and Burger King. You know both offerings essentially are shite and most people just sit there and consume it b/c it's filling.
There's this format called JACK, which is the quintessential of all Mc Donalds Franchise style of radio. It's been plagued all over the USA. The format is owned by Sparknet Communications which licsences it (franchises it) to different cities. It's a jukebox with repetitive hits from years past. BLAH. That's one stupid experiment that didn't work in New York.
Since I've been at my new office job, the computer that I use dosen't have Itunes and won't let you download music from it, so I thought in the mornings I'd listen to my favorite LA radio online.. except sadly it will cease to exist soon.. or it's already gone.
Indie 103's Joe's escalante did a morning show up until a week ago.. Yes, that is Joe Escalante from the Vandals.. I have no idea where it went or why the hell it's gone. Also, KCRW's Nic Harcourt said he's leaving Morning becomes Eclectic. He also does the music for 90210 remake, you know, that American show. He probably makes more money doing music for tv / film. If I had the opportunity to do that, I'd probably do taht too. However, I'm probably going to end up being more loyal to 6 music in the mornings at work.
Well if i had to listen to new york radio, theres 1010 WINS. ha, the news station. It's better than half the music on the airwaves here.
Ryan seacrest is what passes for quality in new york radio.
If you don't know who he is, consider yourself lucky.
He's just terrible.
Anyway, I can't wait to see Adele Live in Soho.
That's SOHO New York.
And yes, WE are getting an Itunes session from Adele american style..
I can't wait.. I should go to that.
